Initially internet was used to connect University networks and research lab networks within the America. The World Wide Web was developed by Timothy Berners-Lee who was an English scientist, in 1989, for European organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
The internet is a public, cooperative and self sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. It is used a set of protocols called TCP/IP.  TCP-is Transmission control protocol and IP-is internet protocol. The Intranet and the extranet are the recent adaptations of internet technology.
